Description
Vitamin D levels of populations in Africa, particularly South Africa, are known to be lower than that of people living elsewhere [1, 2]. In fact, a recent study in Johannesburg confirmed that upon ICU admission, an astonishing 66% of adult patients were vitamin D deficient and that these patients were more severely ill – requiring extra medical support [3]. Age, lifestyle, avoidance of sunlight, urbanization, genetics and inadequate nutrition are thought to be contributing factors. Interestingly, an international peer-reviewed study noted that Vitamin D deficiency is more frequent in the South African elderly (across all races) and the South African Asian/Indian populations [4].
Vitamin D is produced naturally through exposure of the skin to sunlight, or through nutrition in the form of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Both dietary forms are absorbed from the small intestine together with dietary fat and rapidly transported via the lymphatic system and blood to the liver where they are metabolized [4]. Evidence suggests that D3 is more effective at increasing vitamin D blood levels and lasts for a longer period of time [5, 6]. Three drops of 4000 IU (100 ug) vitamin D3 per day is generally accepted as the safe upper limit required for an adult to maintain optimal blood levels. However, this can be varied upon lifestyle or with the advice of a medical practitioner.
